Humbolt Outfitters;

I've hunted most of the western United States and Canada but I can not remember having been more satisfied with the hunting than with your company. I've just come home from my fourth visit hunting in Nevada with your guide, Mike Morrison and can not ever remember, ever being with a guide more knowledgeable about his area, horse's, cooking and those funny one horned cows of his. Mike is simply "the best" in the west. You can count on me for any reference's you need!!!

Dear Mike and Wilde,

Thank you for the top quality job you did outfitting and successfully locating a good bull elk for my son Ian. We offer high recommendations for Humboldt Outfitter, Inc. With your able assistance, Ian killed his first elk on Friday, September 17, 1999. The bull weighed an estimated 900 to 1,000 pounds, on the hoof, and was unofficially "green" scored at 312 using Boone and Crockett Club Scoring System. It won't make the record book (minimum score for a record is 375), but according to Ian, was the best experience of his life.

A brief account of our hunt follows.

Scouting. Camp was set by midday Wednesday. We then scouted the area Wednesday evening and Thursday. About 100 elk were spotted at daylight Thursday morning, including three bulls. Another five bulls were later spotted about one mile west of the first herd, including one big bull and four mid-sized bulls. We speculated that these bulls had left the herd before daylight and had moved upstream, staying in the valley. We also spotted another small bunch, with two good-sized bulls.

About 150 elk were spotted by Thursday evening, including more than 20 bulls. You demonstrated your excellent game spotting abilities by locating elk as far away as three miles, with the aid of binoculars and spotting scopes.

As daylight broke, Ian and Mike could see a good-sized herd elk trailing up the canyon toward them. They lay hid behind rock outcrops on the ridge line, perched about 150 yards above the pass and its elk trailing crossing. They could see five bulls, including a couple of big ones. The bulls were bugling, putting on a good show. The elk reached the pass soon after daylight, when yet another and bigger bull appeared. Ian decided this was the trophy he wanted. Ian dropped the elk in his tracks with a well-placed shoulder shot from his 375 H&H Magnum.

"Packing Out." You did a first class of skinning, quartering, and packing the bull out.

Sincerely,
Al Steninger
